Tuesday 27 October 2009: New build engine Tornado and the N2 running on the SVR, allong with a visit with Hannah to the new Highley Enginehouse.

The N2, 1744, sits at the very end of platform 3 at Bewdley prior to running to Kidderminster. Not quite Topshed...... ....1744 and Tornado on Bewdley shed on Tuesday morning The massive A1 pacific receaves love and attention from it's minions Close up of the front of the N2 and it's condensing pipes for working to Moregate as well as its North British Locomotive Company 1921 builders plate A timewarp shot down platform 3 with both engines still present early on Tuesday morning 7812 Erlestoke Manor is prepaired for the Highley trains by some younger vollunteers 60163 and 1744 ready themselves on shed The supply of tea is issential to the running of the railway smokeing up ready to get her train The N2 starts off towards Kidder' This shot graphically shows the use of drain cocks with large amounts of water forced out of the left cylinder as the engine starts. Some portrate shots of the A1 This engine always manages to be imaculate A classic shed sceane with Tornado, except for the young vollunteers txting on his mobile Tornado's fire is built up before departing with the smoke clearly comming from the two chimney openings of the rimless double chimney. Also clearly visible are the electric indicator lights showing red for reverse. 60163 starts off shed With shed duties done the N2 blasts out of Bewdley with the 1030 from Kidderminster Dispite the dull weather the valley is very colourful with autumn colours We thought this sprig of berrys added a nice touch. A while later 1744 nosily strats up Erdington bank following the restriction for Sterns The N2 storms towards Haye bridge The N2s were a version of Ivatts 0-6-2Ts for the Kings Cross/North London comutter trains by Gresley, inluding a larger supperheated boiler and condersing gear for the Metropolitan tunnels. Tornado followed half an hour later with the Gesley Teak set Tornado blows it's chime whistle for the summit crossing as my wobbly long lens dosn't quite cope with the dull. (The focus ring has play in it)

Shortly after our arrival the resident Standard 2 double heads a visiting Class 5 out up the Old Oak branch The pair storm away past the home signal ready to climb the The same train arrives at Spnney as the signal man sprints to retrieave the single line token A short time later the train emerges from the longer Spinney tunnel A Black five arrives into platform three at Spinney The black 5 was piloting this superb visiting A3, Prince Palatine The train returns haveing looped arround in the two tunnels under the front garden and them returns to platform 3 At the same time the stadards have returned arround the main line from Bay Tree hotly followed by Clan Line and a visiting Britannia, this time surrendering the token at the right time As the green pacifics come to a stand the two standards appear again The two standards had a very long continuas run and again looped round the main passing the junction sigals at Baytree The standards pass the Baytree junction home signals and cross the rockery and the Old Oak branch As the train passes over the bridge one comes into view on the branch The Black five passes under the main line heading for Old Oak This time the tired standards come to a stop in platform three at Spinney.. ..and are sent down the branch The A3 Prince Palatine is serviced in Old Oak yard A look in the cab of the A3 Standard 2 78054 on the turntable at Old Oak The class 5 look towards the table and the 2 to clear it. 73082, Camelot was visiting from Harrow club Coupling up the standards in Old Oak Finally the pair run round The Britania, Cor De Leon had to retire to the shed for some attention to her suspension King James comes down the Old Oak branch behind the house The standards leave Old Oak The Class 2, priming as it hits the climb running watched by a farther and son. Katie is a Romulas varient 0-4-4T. She is arriving at Baytree station A very busy time in Dingley Dell at the end of the double track branch from Baytree The standards have just arrived, as has Katie and Clan Line is shunting a freight. The Standards depart Dingley Dell for Baytree junction Clan Line powers up the branch.. ..assisting the Black five (and the A3) All three stall whilst passing through the halt. Clan Line attempts a restart on the gradient the other two bringing up the rear Crossing the drive King James had been held during the three engine debacal King James crosses the drive The standards power allong the mainline haveing crossed the drive. The three big engine, well disgraced head back towards Baytree with the branch and the location they stalled dropping away fearsomly in the forground

5928 Mount Kilimanjiro, last seen at Bristol, was running here at Lakeside station. Home side Garratt William Rufus passes the 59 at Lakeside 5928 leaves Lakeside Also visiting was this Congo Garratt from the Eastleigh Lakeside Railway, here departing Kingsmere station The 59 shunts its train under the impressive signals 5928 is just under twenty feet long and weighs over two tonns. She was built for Brian Hollingsworth in the early 1970's after his death ran at Western Park after a rebuild in the mid 1990s. She is currently on tour, but is based at the Echolls Wood Railway and when back there normally operates once a month The trains pull forward from the arrival platform and then set back into the departure ones. 5928 and it's train in Kingsmere Station Rufus arrives as the 59 departs Hannah Watches the station with Daddy Hannah goes for a walk in the station 5928 returns past the headshunt and junction for the station and heads for the tunnel Hannah is having fun with Rachael by the signals Mount Kilimanjiro passes the impressive Kingsmere East Signalbox 5928 arrivals next to the Congo Garratt and then heads up the headshunt Hannah and Daddy watch the trains Two red engines bask in the sun.They later departed together - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnyn5xl3XfE Resident 2-4-0 Horton appeared from the sheds Horton backs onto some covered stock in the bay platform. She ran round between the service trains Horton backs past the box and William Rufus William Rufus departs with Horton quitely sitting in the bay William Rufus was built at Moors Valley in 1997 and is based on two Horton Chassis 1A has arrived and pulls forward Followed shortly after by 5928 The 59 was the largest engine on the MVR this weekend, but was of a smaller scale to the other engines. Her length though suppassed all, as dose her power Saint Leonard now departs for a run

A special visitor for the party was Anna Anna's cab includes some nice brass steam valves and steam and vacumn brakes Anna is based on the early Manning Wardle locomotive built for the Admiralty and is similar to the Hunslet quarry engines. Anna has been built recently and her construction serialised in Model Engineer Magazine. She has her own website: http://www.brownmallards.eclipse.co.uk/Anna/Index.htm The cab of visiting rebuilt River type mogul Climbing past signal 10 These 2-6-0s were built as 2-6-4Ts named after rivers but were soon rebuilt into varients of the U class following some accidents A pan of the Mogul Anna heads up to the main line Brian mozies up the car park Violet passes by some guest who were more interested in the motor bike parked by the signal I have already spoken to Brian about his fireing technique The rebuilt River passes some merry makers in the steaming bay and the that motor bike Further on, some other locos prepair for there runs Brian returns Hannah, your supposed to ware your hat but Daddy I want to dance Hannah was facinated by the live jazz band on the station Katie will you dance? I'm Flying The mogul with Guildford shed plate in the station A HST ran on the gauge one track as did this superb Austerity... ..and even impressive heavy freight Alan arrives next to the garden railway Geoff master of the garden railway Anna in the loop siding for lunch Anna is admired from behind the signal box Ron brought allong his latest creation, a 3 inch McLaren Another ground level engine is coaled up Anna passes the new signal box Alan at speed on the raised track Anna comming up the long narrows The undergrowth is succesfully trying to illiminate photo spots on the new land

Can you see the flying coal? Tal sits on ten Tal trys to move all ten ... and fails... ..so the fire is hotted up a bit. Trying again... .with volcanic results Eric and Ernie pose together As Palmerston backs on the the train we look across the Cob Two classic FR engine ready to go Hannah gets comfortable in first class Are we ready to go - can you see the engines? Oiling up the Hawthorn, Davey Tripple expansion engine Mummy's on the phone again Me again The low pressure end of the engine with the big blue drum above the flywheel, the low pressure receaver from the intermediate cylinder The govenor keep the engine at a constant speed by adjusting the inlet steam timing watching the oiling continue The small high pressure cylinder has a steam jacket and Corlis rotary valve. Two each for inlet and exhaulst opened by cams Sun fills the steam hall The Waddon engine is warmed up Where now mum, that ticking engines still got my attention Some vivid colours come out with the sun Why won't this one go yet Many gauges on the tripple No still watching, it's so exciting The tree cylinders across the top of the tripple Eastern and Amos Wolfe compound engine What Daddy doing? The Wolfe Compound has a high and low pressure cylinders together moving the beam from the same bearing It's still nodding I't still Going Mummy, don't take me away OK, ready now, smile Daddy So Excited This on's nice and red, but not going yet! The A4 brews at Bewdly The Duke of Gloucester at point where the two lines diverged Erdington Bank The abutments of the Tenbury branch bridge over the Severn near Northwood Bridgenorth had several locos in steam on standby whilst the shed finnally gets doors fitted 71000 runs round at Bridgenorth This engine now sounds most continental with a turo wining all day and a slow dull thub from the damped down compressor exhaulst The left hand cylinder showing the shaft drive to the centre cylinder cam box A Bulied boiler all stripped Close up of the right hand cam box area showing the plunger for the inlet valve and its head Where does the Duke whistle? Oliver Cromwell caught me out and so was shot from Bewdley platform end, slipping away This could be a train comeing from Tenbury. In reality 5164s local was swapping platforms prior to departure. The local climbs between the safari park and the Tunnel The Duke comes out of the tunnel The blue A4 only made one forward run in daylight.. ..and then it was dull.. ..climbing up to the tunnel The Local passes again The other visitor was Nunney Castle with the collet set The driver of the Duke gets his head arround all the gadgest from electric lights to air breaks Above the carden shaft and gearbox on the firemans side is the stones Turbo generator for the electrics, mostly safety devices for main line operation The right side cam box and valve heads. The second shaft move the sleaves that move position the cams for direction and cutt off control Not the best hand held, but an impression of the atmosphire at Kidderminster that evening with the Duke ready to go and the A4 arriving. A slightly late arrival on Sunday morning already had the A4 underway, but here she is from where I got up the path by Bewdley South Viaduct I was however early engouh for this out comming out of Northwood, haveing been foxed by it running early the previous day 5029 speeds towards Bewdley near Old Northwood cottage with the express milk syphons

This Crane was just inside the entrance on the Ickenham club stand On the 7 1/4 Society stand was this Britannia Complete with amused crew At the other end of the stand was this newly completed Duchess of Hamilton The cab of the Duchess was superb, but the boiler back is false.... ...behind the blackhead was some gearing to allow the use of these dual controls on the back of the tender. Steve has built this HO Diorama with a few buildings from WUT on the NLSME stand Ron's prize winning A4 was positioned underneath some small 5 inch engines to make it look bigger A part built Clayton Wagon on the stand At the other end was Dave Jones Evening Stare, a red Mini and several small models In the centre of the stand were two superb models, Grahams B17 and Richards class 2 with a tiny (by comparison) 4mm model of a Great Central O4 standing between them Davids Shay was here again alony with Mini Mus and an antique camera and a small marine engine The cab of the class 2 with the LMS combined vacuum/steam brake valve the large brass chunk in the middle Ian's Crosti 9F was on hand A view of the stand from the end 2inch Fowler BB1 Plowing Engine on the Harlington stand As was this 16mm Shay and this B1 and signals An unusual saddle tank on the Harrow stand Some mechanised Mecano A mecano ploughing engine and a working mecano drag line 5 inch Industrial (Hawthone Leslie) Singapore An Early 4 inch Fowler Ploughing enine On the Wycombe stand this attractive stationary engine Also this North British C class A small War Department Hunslet The 1st 10 1/4 Terrier The second Terrier, appropriately named Brighton A Sentinel gered engine There was an ocean battle raging Some raceing wings with 2 stroke engines Russell and the Gladstone car, appologies for the bad flash, it would seem it was all or nothing A Russian war ship A radio controlled American Tank The Nurtilas A steam powered pilot boat On the G1MRA track was this impressive DRG class 62 and this Spamcan A bit of artillery Walice and Gromit Air power Larger air power Later in the day the crowds thinned and we can see the whole stand, which won 2nd prize A view of the A4 again, with Helen Lassie, Shiela, the class 10, Clayton, Rail-motor and HO factory all about Finally, back on G1MRA was Silver Fox

This is our stand at the London Model Engineer Exhibition at Alexandra Palace looking towards the Rose Window Brian and Violet As dose Tim, passing the camping shop Les has imported this Eureka Models AD60 Garratt from Australia Clearing her cylinder in doing so Tranquility and a train Small Pannier rescues failed diesel 5786 got stuck down the line when the diesel failed so I took the opertunity to shoot her in the evening sun at Hood Bridge, Riverfood. Main view of Coldharbour mill from the road, smoking gently getting steam up and reflecting in the mill leat supplying the waterwheel Steaming gently the main inlet valves, there is one for each end of the cylinder as there are on the exhaulst side, thus four valves in total for each cylinder This operates trip gear that release the drop valves at varying points of its stoke to keep the engine at a constant speed The high pressure cylinder and valve gear Feeding the boiler at Coldharbour Mill The main engine connects to the mill directly by strong ropes from the flywheel The horizontal engine viewed wide showing the high pressure side, piston rods and flywheel connected to the mill. The low pressure cylinder is just visible accross the room Mike makes last minite checks to Elsie The diesel is there for protection incase the driver has to be relieaved! Backing up to the loop P2 Lord President now gets under way Gresleys experimental 4 cylinder compound 10000, know as the Hush Hush Hill start - no problem The Sun made a breif appearance whilst the P2 was in the station A4 on the Bottom Loop Head on Sterling number 95 Rishra at Pages Park Doll leaves on the second train again to a whistle chorus Hill climbers 740 and 19B 740 now backs down on 778 The grin says it all Two little red engines together Little blue lady under awsom mountains at Boston Lodge. NGG16 87s rear engine unit has now been compleatly rebuilt in the works Study of ME at Minffordd Time to go Both birthday Boys are sharing the driving The model carries the correct WDLR number for the FRs Mountaineer. 1265 Past signal 10 at the very bottom of the climb ..noisily too The ground level was also explored quite well with three locos including this Riggenbach Kopel The Admas started away, unfortunatly, gust as a rain storm decended and so strugeled for a footing Unfortunatly a gasget had gone on the steam pipe to the cylinders so she was failed, this being her last curcit. Mike ran this engine for quite some time. It was a joy to see him enjoy himself so much Nick and Lea along for the ride Mike blasts round workshop curve In her stride now digging into the climb Russell takes itself to bed Illuminated under a thretening sky the two engines couple together Off with a happy load of excited children Tony and Polar Star steam by A busy school visit has Brian whistling off from the station

Kiderminster station inthe pouring rainwith three locos. 5164 climbs away from Northwood Crossing Large prarie 5164, with it's Wellington shed code visible on the front step Micky Mouse 46443 in Northwood 46443 aproaching the crossing with the Gresley set 7802, Bradley Manor, climbs away from Northwood My version of the classic shot, but with a differnt Manor and no frost. Stanier Mogul 42968 clibs out of Bewdley 42968 passes the junction for the Wyre forest branch 4566 is spruced up after return from Gwilli The small prarie has its rods cleaned Shineing the smokebox Another crew member polishes the safety valve bonnet Erlestoke Manor is admired by the visitors to Santa's grotto at Arley Station 7812 has just been overhaulled for a 2nd time in preservation A wider view of 7812 at Arley 5164 climbs towards Arley.. ..having crossed Victoria bridge 7812 accelerates out of Arley Having run-round 5164 stunts into Arley platform surrounded by busy merry makers Watched by many the large prarie comes to a stand with the P-way crew walking north through the up platform 5164's front steam heat valve leaks a bit 5164 now powers away fromthe cutting Going for black and white, 5164 the river Severn is in the back ground. Merky Arley 46443 crosses Victoria Bridge and minuites later clibs up from it 7802, Bradley Manor was bought as spair parts for 7812 and ended up being restored compleatly too The Stanier mogul follows the Ivatt up the embankment from the river bridge

I had never been to the railway before but have a facination for the original paper mill system here. The Railway is due to run it's last train on Boxing Day as the lease for the land it is built on is not being renewed pending modern development unless they find considerable support. The railway has been here over a century. Saturday 6 December 2008: Haveing a daughter proved to be a good excusse to get out to the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Santa trains. Melior has just arrived at Sittinbourne Viaduct station Close up of Melior's works plate. Setting off to run round At this point the railway continued accross the road into the mill until 1968 Steam releaces everywhere as Melior moves forward Poor Melior was leaking steam everywhere as she ran round Somebogie wagons in the sidings Backing onto the train with the headboard in the way impressive views of the steam leaking out of the cylinder glands Another steamy view as Melior shuffels into the right place As the steam clears the valve gear slowly becomes visible Hannah and Rachael come up for a look at the engine.. ..and waves at silly daddy more waving Melior ready to depart Some ajustments are made to the lubricator in the cab. Mother and daughter on the train A study iun water vapour as Melior gets ready to leave The headboard is moved to the front On arrival at Kemsley Down Melior is watered and coaled Meliorinthe sun at the end of the platform Playing with backlight and steam A view accross the yard we can see Premier Train ready to depart Kemsley Down Melior spewing out steam as she leaves The Station manager waves merrily at the departing children Hannah meets Santa A look up the yard from the cafe Alpha, the first of the three Baretto class 0-6-2Ts is under longterm restoration,not having worked since 1969 A look onto the shed to see Triumph, flanked by Leader and Superb Melior returns to Kemsley Down This standard Gauge fireless loco, number 1 was the last railway engine used by Bowater paper mills in 1979 Tiumph is the other working loco on the SKLR,though her ticket is up in January so she may not steam again. Baretto class mate Superb has been under overhaul for the last few years Leader is the second of the Brazil class 0-4-2STs of 1905 last worked in 1981 and is under overhaul Melior is the fourth Brazil class, ordered several years later and has differant valve gear and is running round

Bush Mills number 3 starts towards us from the other end of Dinas yard 7 1/4 modle of a 1911 Garratt that ran in the Belgian Congo and normally residant on the Eastleigh Lakeside Raiwlay The Cab of the Rhodeasian 14A 5 inch gauge Rhodeasian Railways 14A 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garratt Another view of the 14A William Rufus from the Mores Valley Railway This is based on the two locomotive built in 1913 for Burma. They were 2ft 6in gauge and were the second smallest Garratt ever built The cab of number 3 Another Small Garratt was those that went to Ziear and very similar to the Congo engines. This is a 5 inch model bassed on the design using Maxitrax parts Close up of the front of the Burmeas engine Number 3 is 7 1/4 inch gauge and often runs on the Echills Wood Railway A 2 1/2 inch gauge Kenyan wartime garratt Front view of imposing 14a 512 which was built to the 1920's 14th class design in 1958 The imaculate cab of the Congo Garratt compleat with paint brush Prince is worming up outside the south yard shed with 143 and 138s boiler inside 138 had some hot riviting done on its boiler which is having a 10 year overhaul A look in the cab of the Bush Mills Garratt Bush Mills number 3 is fussed over while the original K1 runs onto the headshunt behind Standard Gauge saddle tank 1827 built in 1879 was the Beyer Peacock works shunter until 1966 and ran on a demonstartion line towering over everything else, just. K1 runs under the Dinas road bridge to the sheds on Friday Prince now warmed though was breifly shunted onto the mainline On the very wet Saturday morning 143, whos party this was, and Prince came off shed together and sat in the down platform Looking up the yard you can see how wet it really was with mini K1, shunter 1827, Bush Mills 3 and 143 all in view here 1827 gave footplate rides which were popular all day even in the very visible rain K1 runs up from Cearnafon and passes Prince 15 inch gauge Bush Mills 3 and 7 1/4 inch gauge mini K1 under the rail loading gantry Close up of the name plate of another fine Garratt Rain getts the better of me as all three K1s run side by side for a short distance A very soggy shunter In the marquee were the larger static exhibits and this display of modeles includeing a Midland Garratt This Cab Forward haed been modified to British appearance compleat with class 47 style cab Gresleys Masterpiece 6 cylinder Garratt centre stage This Astralian AD60 has been painted BR green and named City of Gorton Another kit bashed cab forward now marskerading as an articulated Duchess

Brian steams his Foster up to the station Level with the main line a visiting B1 steams along side Peter leads the speaches with Mike and David Dick was one of many people who received a certificate for work on the ground level Laurie.... ..and Brian received trophies for there especial contributions Mike presents Peter with a tankard The tankard is engraved withthe club logo and is for Peters leadership of the extension Bert also received a certificate - despite his late arrival and had a short speach Pete and Bert The nameplate, air pump, sandbox, bar frames and fully equalized springing of EAR Tribal class Bahehe 3108 attracts attention in the steaming bays A massive engine for 5 inch gauge 3108 is too long for the traverser The 31 begins what was to become a very long run on our track Finding her feet on the deviation This superb 9F Evening Star was visiting the ground level Brian and Violet and aquantences track the raised main line 3108 climbs up the deviation. Steam from the boiler blowdown can be seen behind and through the bar fames 92220 shows off its Red Dragon head board at Henley Halt Attracting a lot of attention the 9F steams through Henley Halt heading through the point work outside the station Tribal 3108 is closely studied in the station 3108 gently smokes in the station and presents the opportunity for some slightly longer exposures The Tribal 2-8-4s were built by Vulcan foundry in 1955 for the East African Railways, branch and heavy shunting work in Kenya and Uganda 3108 and B1 Springbok rest in the station for lunch Starting away Climbing up the deviation.... ...giving a jungle impression Violet simmers away behind the coach The new Diamond crossing to the Cuckoo line The Danish ice breaker on the lake The 9F on a very welcome freight train in the long narrows Comming out of the narrows on to the new land Climbing off the mound level with a train on the raised track Two trains on the bottom loop The freight train continues back up the line Dave and 3108 round the bottom loop The massive 2-8-4 climbs the gradient with ease Springbok, visiting from Harlington, climbs up the long narrows We put together this exhibition which included this display of smaller models A 2 truck Shay Contrasts in scales and HO Shay on the 5'' Shay Terrier Number 5 with a OO version on the running board Rachael chats with George and Bert in the exhibition with Sussie M in the centre The Shays engine Jonathons Hawthorn Saddle Tank has now been painted and was running on Midsommer Gerry's Sadie displays the special headboard for the ground level opening cavelcade

The largest visitor by far was this 71/4 single Farlie, here arising steam under the station canopy The spacious sit in cab of the Single Farlie Portrate of a Peckett The Cab of Peckett, Gamecock A Close up of the builders plate of the Peckett. The original was a 4 coupled modification of an earlier 6 coupled type built for a granite tramway in the Mendips. Only two were built, this engine was scraped in the 1920s but the second was exported to Australia and is restored there in running order on the famious Puffing Billy Single Farlie known as Merlin collecting stock Merlin start the climb round the site just after having crossed the entral road by the gate Merlin heading out of Henley Halt Merlin appears out of the long growth climbing round the mound on the new line Merlin climbing away from the mound near signal 10 on the main line with some happy passenginer Warming up nicley heading back to the station area This locomotive represents Metropolitan Railway L 31 and featchers Simplex wheels and Butch boiler, cylinders and valve gear Gamecock has impatently arrived at the station Builder Keith is perswaded into driving her round One of two Dorisis running today bblisters past making a right racket Keith and Gamecock climb arround the deviation L31 also climbing the deviation with a load of passengers and apparently making light work Gamecock climbs towards signal 12a, the ground level line seen behind Gamecock was followed by L31 Climbing the deviation and its time for coffee The same spot a short time later with the sun out and Adams A12 in mid climb The single Farlie at Henley Halt This engine has novel lifting injectors on the tank tops The Peckett climbs round the bottom loop with a load of passengers Close up of this superb locomotive in action Brian rounds the bottom loop with his single wheeler L31 also runns through the loop The Lovley Adams A12 0-4-2 hisses out of the dell and starts the stiff climb back to the station Close up of the A12 passing signal 10 The juniors were represented with this LMS liveried 08 running all afternoon The second Dorris flashes through an amber signal 10 The other engine to run on the ground level was this 0-4-0T climb round the mound by singal 10 The A12 has had a change of crew and runs passed the colourfull flora Shutting off for Dingley Dell L31 again climbing out of the loop Now and unashamed sequence of the A12 re-starting at signal 11 The A12s were built for the LSWR from 1887 to 1895 by Nine Elms and Neilsons Climbing into the long narrows The 040T - Called Hercules climbs off the new land with the bottom loop and mound in the distance The Peckett has just restarted from signal 10 This Dorris re-starts after lunch , from the traverser and gives a graphic demonstration of primeing A general view of the ground level station from the turntable pit The new deviation has opened up some new sunny spots on the climb to the tunnel and the A12 is making light work of it here Dorris blistering up the bank again

Palmerston on Saturday morning haveing been cleaned from a very dirty state enjoys a little light buffing up Julie has the right idea of letting Mathiew do all the work on Jerry M Palmerston is now over the pit in the shed for oiling up Julie does the same to Jerry M outside We have now come out to the ash pit Jerry M fills the canopy with smoke as she prepairs to bring out the Carcas of Josophine Jerry M errups from under the canopy passing Jack the ainchent Ruston Diesel This was my best chance of a line up all weekend. Jerry M blasting past Palmerston Once the Hunslet was out the way we went up to get the goods train Palmerston with the short goods train in the quarry area Palmerston on the edge of Surrey.. ...looking over the South Downs Palmerston from within the quarry Fort William steel veteren, Hunslet Josophine, being overhauled near by Caledonia is out of ticket and a start is being made on her overhaul Palmerston and Jerry M in the station Jerry M returned home from Wales We took a break whilst Jerry M took out a passenger train Waiting for our next run, even with a thin fire Palmerston lifts both safety valves Palmerston and Jerry M double head on Sunday Palmerston dose most of the work infront of Jerry M up the 1:38 bank out of Hollycombe Junction Burrell Gold Medal traction engine, Sunset No 2 was doing the cart rides during the weekend Wallis Simplicity with interesting surroundings A station full of red engines Palmerston now gets ready fomr some solo work Sunset departs first We start to blast our way out of the station It was a struggel to start this particular train Palmerston covers Jerry M in steam from the drain cocks And keeps doing so for good measure Starting to bite in.... ...slipping in main valve volcanic erruptions result. Following the slip we start to dig in again

Jerremy enjoys a windup with Oliver on his first day passed out as a fireman Tal leaves Porth and starts to cross the Cob Taliesin approaches the starting signal Jerremy prodly in place on his 2nd solo trip A short time later there was a clear view towards Boston Lodge with Earl of Merrioneth approaching A wider view showing the full splendar of the area Earl of Merioneth on the cob Recently repainted EoM enters Harbour station Jerry M is visiting from Hollycombe and is takes the classic shot by the harbour water tower A seeky look in Jerry M's cab Looking down the yard now the Hunsletts are preparing a freight train whilst Prince is prepairing a shuttle Elder statesman Lilla of 1891 was modified for the design of Jerry M built in 1895 Young nipper, baby Britonmart of 1899 simers gently Three Hunslets lined up oldest left to newest right and in size order. Prince prepairs Y Cymro for a run to Tan Y Bwlch DLG runs in accross the cob Jerry M is one of two Mills type Hunslets for the tramroad on the ground level of Dinorwic quarries. Her sister is currently not in running order DLG runs in past the freight prepaired by Britomart Busy Porthmadog The Three Hunsletts combin on the freight to Minffordd blasting past Number 3 Boston Lodge The train now on Bron Madog Jerry M working hard in the middle of the two residents Unfortunatly cutting the very front off Britomart this shot allows close contrast between the three similar but differant engines Britomart and Jerry M pass the hostle Britomart, Jerry M and Lilla enter Minffordd station The excitment over in the platform The original plan was to run into the down loop, but Jerry M kept going so the trio shunt out the top end Now set back in the down side slightly differant light on the last one The train backs down the mineral line to the yard Stoped by the weigh house With owner Robco very happily at the controls Britomart blasts along the Mineral line past the Hostle leading the other two Arriving at Boston Lodge, above a low tide in the marsh Britomart leads on shed Three together comming on shed Robco trys to shift Jerry M by the inspection wholes The FR assisting crew give a very diesel gricer solute A Close up of the works plate of Jerry M Lilla cools quitely at the back of the group. Before the running seasion starts we see the ground level has extended beyond last years end of track onto the new land It then swings around the bottom loop on the mainlin and past signal 10 A deviation on the mail line is also progressing at great speed to avoide some of the ever expanding trees The sweeping curves of the deviation can be seen in relation to the old line, still mostly in place. By the waterboard boundry fence the ground level decends a fearsome 1:70 behind Rebekahs mound From the opersite side of the tracks looking towards the heath Lower down the grade earth works have been nesersary to keep the gradient constant The greatest extremity of the line a great curve is marked out partially in a cutting Looking back up the gradient towards the parrallel Looking back to the waterworks the new line curves round the mound The current end of track, with the other end just visible beyond the barrow A bit further round showing the course the line willtake very soon. The Mainline will eventually be extended and run onto the embankment on the right, through the mound. From the top of the mound the other line curving round from the main line. Looking back to the parallel section From one of my faviourate locations showing the new track. Signal 10 is normally located here From the mail line looking towards Rebekahs mound. A closer look at the work on the mainline Mike dose some mortaring From the workshop the course the new curves will take. This area was trechourus before, starting from the steaming bays, but now the curves are tighter........... Dick has repainted 4300 Brian and his 4-4-0 dig in on the new deviation 4300 leaves the station area Dick storming the new section with gustow. Tony can be seen heading away from the station a behind The ground level is now a compleat track, if still to be landscape. A new toy for someone. This is SP&S 700 from Sunset Brass with full DCC sound control Spokan, Portland and Seatle Railroad had 3 of these masive E1s built in the late 1930's for express services. 700 in Woodside Union Terminal track 1. Head end view The 60 class Garratt sitts on a load of empty coal tubs in Lima loop Daylight 4430 and Hudson 2807 at WUT 700 returns faceing the oposite direction Close up of the front end detail on this well detailed model The Empire Builder and the columbia daylight cross at Lima The full sized 700 is preserved in Portland in the same roundhouse as the preserved Daylight 4449 GS-4 and E1 Westbound in tracks 1 and 2 Thoughbreads of Baldwin and Lima at Woodside 4430 climbs out of tunnel 1 approaching Lima Entering Lima from the belt line Some of the WUT crew Clive runs the Caniadian into Woodside Mike payed us a visit and is inspecting 700 in Lima ...and arriving track 2 with the freight yard busy as usual 4430 now on freight duty 4430, 1st of the GS-4s, is about to head down to Woodside whilst F5 3762, a 1925 Baldwin 2-10-2 backs on to a heavy coal drag Time for play as Mike drives 700 into Woodside... At the CMRA exhibition a Robinson O4 passes an Ivatt 4 Mogul with a coal loader in the background Another view of the coal loader and private yard This French metre gauge 4-6-0 was differant On the St Albans Model Engineers stand was this gourgious 5inch gauge LNWR Jumbo.. ..Also this 16mm Parlmerston, in original condition, hiding under a 3.5 inch Papirus and Robey steam tractor. Back on the stage an LMS Garratt clanks past the NCB loader The 16mm Garratt operators group I have seen a few times this winter. This Dargeeling Garratt was first in operation Their layout has this impressive working coaling stage Chris Moody fires up this coal fired NGG16 and setts the hall fire alarms off Close up of the blue NGG16 with the fire door open for fire cleaning The green 16 is now running and pulling an impressive train of hoppers A slightly smaller South African narrow gauge shed, again with NGG16s a plenty BBack on WUTIII this nice UP consolidation prepars to leave Baldwin High level yard for McKeen At Union station 4430 waits in track 2 whilst 3762 passes through the freight bypass We arrived at Brighton in time to see the conclusion of this miniture tank battel, which was truely awsom Two tanks confront a red cross all terain vehical This Japanease suicide sub was one of several model submariens on show Serveral miniature buildings were on display, this one with a Jazz ensomble rehersing inside There was a 4mm scale model of the untilmate transport museum. Many much sort after locomotives were on display, including Gresleys 10000 and (out of sight in the main building) his 6 cylinder Garratt The ational Transport Museum layout also included a perimiter narrowgauge ride The NG and SG demo lines crossed these working bridges with restored steam boats behind and in the greay building, just visible, was a large stationary engine turning over Brighton would not be compleat without a Terrier This super paddle tug, Eye-Lynne was demonstrated in the boating pool

We all met at Waunfawr where Prince soon arrived blasting under the road bridge Saturdays weather was dull all day but we made the best of the first location at Clogwyn Y Gwin were Prince started by smoking up the slate tips Prince putting on a display under the old Snowdon Quarry tips Prince, still sprightly, despit being built in 1863 comes out from the curves and is now blowing off Starting the next run passt aproaching UB114 A brieaf bright spot on the curves under Clogwyn Y Gwin The next location was Ffridd Isaf and starting the first pass almost from where we first started Ffridd Isaf curves Just beneith the cloud cover (and Snowdon summit) Prince run towards us again with the Clogwyn Y Gwin roack just behind to the left of the van Zoom in of the previous shot Approaching Ffridd Isaf curves with Russell by the wall Murk down the valley as Prince crosses it's head near Rhyd Ddu Ffridd Isaf from above charging towards Rhyd Ddu at Ffridd Isaf Palmerston was already at Rhyd Ddu under the south water tank. Prince's train entres the contruction line on the left and the old tamper is on the right The photographers were taken down to the locations phase 4 by two former London Transport RMLs. Prince overtakes one on the road above Rydd Ddu Prince on the parallel section with the road approaching Pitts Head The train head into the cloudy gloom before we followed We are now just behind Beddgelert station in the middle of the dramatic S bends Prince, breaking the train down hill approaches the deep Cutting Mawr amidst spectacular Autum colours Palmerston, faceing uphill, now takes the train back up towards us. The large loco water tank at the north end of Beddgelert station platform can be seen across the field At this point the railway is on a constant uncompensated 1:40 gradient and has decended most of the hight from under the cloud visible on the mountain behind. All I did from the last shot was turn 90 degrees a wait 90 seconds to see Palmerston blast up through Cutting Mawr for the first time this weekend Mawr in Welsh is long or big. More effort under the massive rocks Working hard into the cutting Palmerstons exhaulst towers up the rock faces and beyond Starting the next run by the farm gate Too much effort, Palmerston slips I make no excusses for featuring this spectacular section of track looping around three sides of this field Close up of Palmerstons effort 100 feet lower at the foot of cutting mawr. Emerging from the cutting the railway curves round some more to continuasly gain hight

Alright this is not Green Arrow but the SVR's recently restored 4566 in the Rock siding at Bewdley We had an evening seasion on Monday night and first posed 4771 behind the signal gantry next to Bewdley South Box When the Generator for the flood lights over headed we moved back to the station 4771 and 4566 by the foot crossing in the early eveing under The Plough star constilation in the sky between the water tanks The loco serviceing area at bBewdley is next to a sandstone cliff, nicly lit up hear behind 4566 There is nothing quite like the atmophire of a steam hauled train in the dark 4566 over the pit A look inside Green Arrow's cab Tuesday morning finds the engine simmering on shed. Giveing a good impression of a genuine US engine terminal FEF3 838 waites by the turntable The Bigboy blows steam into the evergreens FEF1 818 from the bridge above the Union Pacific Station The FEF3 Queen of Nebraska waites infron of Sherman Hill for her next duty Rio Grande K36 488 fills with water whilst Dad waites patently for me to finish griceing 818 steams in as we have a look at 488s cab 488 General Palmer at speed Outside the engine terminal are the UP Centenial, K37 498, the FEF3 and the Amtrak E9s This lovly freelance 2-6-2 has already been sold but I caught her outside on a sunny day The K37 Otto Mears by the terminal with 838 undergoing servicing behind 488 exits Moffet Tunnel driven by Dobwalls creator John Southern On another day the Big Boy crosses Dale Creek tressel 4008 impressivly waites at the station 4008 rounding Sherman Hill The E9s cross Dale creek with views accros Cornwall behind The cab of the Big Boy. The Butterfly doors open down ward and notice the central footbrake John Southern encourages 4008 forward leaving a lasting impression on some younge children 498 on shed. I never encountered the FEF3 in steam but here she is in the shed Classic Dobwalls Now on the Rio Grande line the E units leave the station on a double crossover FEF1 Queen of Wyoming leaves the UP station 818 impresivly blasts out of a tunnel climbing up the spirals Just bellow the Summit 818 rounds Sherman Hill 838 on the turntable 818 behind Sherman Hill Crossinf Dale Creek once again Climbing into the woods from the station The Santa Fe FP45 on the Rio Grande line Queen of Wyoming leaves the station with a full load Finally the Big Boy passes Sherman Rocks

I beet the dredful traffic caused by high winds to Loughborough, arriving early I took this time exposure of 4141 and 49395 by the shed Simering in the platform we look across the cab to the many controls on the firemans side. This is a crampt footplate and the gauges are mounted on the side wall. The Injectors are operated by the pull handels above the boiler, whilst the steam brake near the roof blows emulsified oil all arround. This is a close up of the expansion blocks and other levers of the Joy Valve gear. Moving up and down rods are directed in their osilating movements by the pitch of the blocks which have a curved channel clearly seen here. The vertical rods connect to the valve rods just bellow the blocks and are anchared bellow the cylinder casting and by a swing link on the piston rods The righthand inside crank and big end. The vertical rods of the valve gear can be seen in the far left where they conect to the swing link on the piston rod and the link rod to the forward anchar pin bellow. The expansion block are just above. It was a horible wet morning as the crew oiled arround in, appropriatly, oil skins The gaurd has arrived and is inspecting his train With the promis of a blue sky the Super D makes her first departure from Loughborough A shaft of favourable light reflected on the front of the engine to start with 49395 explodes from under Great Central road Comeing from the platform the smokebox is once again highlighted Another departure amoungst the maze of pointwork The wind has got up again and is snatching the exhaust straight off 49395 begins to cross over to the up line The Super D now makes a departure from the avoiding loop Back in murk our train drifts down the main past a fine display of signals Empty mineral train rumbles south Our train comes from the loop and crosses the down line to reach the up main. We now begin to power away from the busy station In this colour shot the shunt signal is highlighted by the steam behind. The highest signal is the the furthest left road, lowest to the furthest to the right Another picture I can't decide which is best. B/W version The last sunlight this morning highlights the train as it continues to the south Blowing out of the loop. The wind batters the trees and snatchest away the steam as the train heads out of town 49395 accelerates on the up main out of the south yard Our minerals cross the tracks again A mineral train annonomusly passes through the good avouding loop at Loughborough central station The train steam out of the loop and has the road on the main A spot of reflection in the copious puddles Our south bound train takes water in the north yard before continuing through the loop Past the old goods Classic activity arround the engine. Thanks Russ The Super D has an unrestricted passage through the next section The wind blows the exhaust away at right angles 49395 clanks past Quarn goods shed A Look down the yard at Quarn as the next train approches. The diamond plate on the signal post shows it is protected by a track circuit indecator in the box The wind still blows hard as the train passes the starter 49395 splits the semerphores at Quarn Heavy rain lashes across the train as the steam is blown infront of the signals The windcutter passes a local mixed freight as the wind has died a bit so we can see the signal box A clear road south under thretening skies Steaming through the station at Quarn The super D blasts under the Woodhouse road

8F 48305 is has the road from the siding at Quarn whilst the gaurd makes final checks on the wagons bearings The 8F now noisily moves the Windcutters onto the main amid wind and close drizel 48305 was built by Crew in 1941 for heavy war train service on the LMS. She was restored at Loughborough from a Barry wreck in 1995 and has extra boiler work compleated more recently back at Crew The Super D roars across a desolate field full of sheep 20 years more senior than the 8F Super D 49395 brings back daily memories of the LNWR The first passing of the day of 8305 and the super D north of Quarn Reminicent of nearly 40 years of doing this unglamious work a Super D crosses the British landscape The 8F now trundels across the bridge to the farm near Quarn in typical British winter weather The colour version of the previous image the pair cross again on the embankment accross the small stream. In this chalenging weather I have been undecided which photographs work beter in Black and white or colour, some work equally as well 49395 crosses the field containing a small stream meeting the 8F again, the following day this small stream was flooding the feld with all the rain run off 48305 roars past a signal upsetting the sheep, with the sanders on gripping in, like she had done during over twenty years of unglamourus freight service The 8F crosses the bridge as the sheep finaly decide to run for it... ... it was a good job too as a Super D was comming the other way! This is the full version of the previous image, classic freight taken for granted allong with traditional farming The 8F continues north Believe it or not it's nearly lunch time as the Super D makes a run for Quarn. This is in colour purly to show the dire weather. 49395 about to blast through the bridge into Quarn There's a train a comming This mixed frieght will not be stopping as she has a clear road south Just before the 0-8-0 arrives the 8F errupts under the road onto the scean heading north 8F and super D passing on mainline frieght service. Normality for many years A train of empty mineral wagons heads north passing a mix goods 48305 hids quitely amoung the bagage at Quarn and Woodhouse station, on the Great Central Railway The 8F once again has a clear road as she is watched from the trackside 49395 rolls into Quarn station At lunch time the 8F has been serviced and waites in the loop to to collect her next train A Close up of the sandbox on the Super D reveals she is on loan from the National Collection The LNWR identification on the back of the tender These engines have unusual cast iron wheels A view of the drivers side of the cab of 49395, compleat with instructions on how to work the lubricators and the crews tea tins The Super D has a single ejector and this is its only control. It is linked across the cab top to a steam brake valve The Classic long boiler 0-8-0 rests next the the conopy collumns in the rain Ready and waiting in the rain following lunch break As 49395 moves forward blowing out her cylinders the rain can be seen acrros the front of the smokebox Fancy Metting you hear Double trouble Stugeling south in the rain Blowing south prior to passing under Woodthorp bridge the A6 Derby rod in the background Just past the bridge an 8F hisses past its drains stuck open. It is the third layout of this name but the only one on that has occupied this room. The previous ones were built in the Westside hall when the group met there. This idea of this gallery is to guide you round the layout and show off some of the models separately from the NLSME pages. WUT III has a large yard called Richmond in the middle nof the room and is where the coal trains come to be empties into the powerstation. It also has extensive general freight facilities. Two 2-8-0s bring a loaded train to stop by the depot. Santa Fe 2-8-0 2546 rests by the depot and infront of the Richmond stop block AC-4 4101 crosses the main road by Richmond depot. Further back in the yard we can see the Richmond freight sheds. This Santa Fe 2-8-0 is just picking up some cars for its mixed train to McKeen Richmond has a mediam sized turntable and engine facility. Here a J1 is under the coaling tower. A switched moves a caboos about to the left and the powerstation building and yards are far behind the coal tower An SP 2-8-2 comes off the turntable. A mixed freight waights switching into the yards and in the far distance the Woodside main yard A USRA 4-8-2 on the Richmond table next to the tail of the full coal train it has just delivered General view of Richmond yard from opposite the engine terminal The Belt line links the east of Woodside with Richmond. A short spur also connects the Belt line to the low level yard at Baldwin via a junction behind the engine terminal. The Cabforward is climbing up from Woodside past a maintenance train in the small yard bellow. The 4-8-2 decends from Richmond with its empties returning to the mine and passes a small pond. Behind the locomotive is a tunnel that leads to a hidden turning loop under the belt line. This can also connect to a fiddle yard underneith Richmond. The mountain and its train now enter the west end of the large Woodside yard with the passenger terminal to the left and the frieght yards in the foreground A gerneral view of the West end of Woodside yard showing the extensive frieght and passenger facilities. As SP Daylight train is about to leave track 1 whilst a mixed frieght is held in the hole above woodside at Angus A differant GS-4, a brass one, in the passenger station. A reefer block waights to leave the almost empty freight yard. A Challenger bypasses Woodside compleatly on its way to Richmond The AC-4 is ready to head this long Reeffer block West from Woodside Two SP switchers order the Woodside yard under the main road A 2-8-0 shuffels in the yard full of box cars. A CP 2-10-0 moves forward to collect its train east whilst SP switcher 1234 collects a caboose A Pensy Q1 Duplex sets out with a load of coal empties, past a N&W J pressed into freight use. PRR and Amtrak deisels humm in the passenger depot Woodside Union Station hosts two SP Daylight trains and an Amtrak Deisel from another era A Union Pacific FEF1 now shars space with the GS-4. My Westside GS-4 poses in Union Station A more head on view of the East platform ends A general view of the east of Woodsides large yard showing frieght and passenger as well as a switcher in the engine facilities Western USA in the 1950s. UP and SP 4-8-4s share passengers with an AC-4 and a CP streamliner. A Pensy interloaper is ready in the freight yard. A better view of the passenger line up. The Passenger trains have all gone. GS-4 4430 is ready with a Reefer block. AC-4 4101 sits on a general freight whilst a new fangeled GE unit heads a train of empty coal hoppers through the bypass track. A detailed look of 4430 4449 arrives at Woodside with its daylight train with UP 817 waights to power east. To the left some Rio Grande F units are serviced 3964 rolls down the grade past the engine terminal 4101 plods out of the Woodside yard passing the engine terminal. You can see the length of the yard, the control pannel, Angus loop on the shelf and the McKeen branch above. There's a gremlin in the Woodside control pannel!! SP power in the Woodside engine facility Two Challengers and an F unit at the Sand racks Between Woodside and Lima the railway with double track crosses a river. This bridge swings open to allow access to the room. The British OO layout can be seen through the door Lima is the principle intermeadiate station. There are four through lines and several industry sidings. Switcher 1234 collects cars at the west end of Lima A view down the Lima yard 4430 and its reefers pause on its way west at Lima An SP 4-10-2 arrives at Lima from the east passing a petrol car 4449 brings train 99 past the Lima water plug 4430 and the Lima depot Looking down the yard from the Lima main street. In the back of the picture you can see the control pannel for the Mckeen branch terminus and the bridge accros the canion to Erie with the mine building on top. 610 passes Lima depot with empty coal hoppers A view accross the yard at Lima UP 9009 is a 4-12-2. She is fantastic and sits by the water tank at Lima Train 99 rolls past the North Lima Sewing Machine Engineers (NLSME !!) Train 99 has to pass before 4101 can go yet. 4430 crosses the road at the east end of Lima yard. 4101 waights to go up the hill
